Industrial finishes. Lasting impact.
Texture Coating & Spray Rendering
Texture coating is a sprayed finish applied over render, panel joints or blockwork. At commercial scale it is faster, more consistent and far more durable than hand-applied render.
Why texture coating is worth it at this scale
Hand-rendering a large commercial elevation is slow, weather-dependent, and the finish varies with whoever is holding the float that day. Sprayed texture coating is faster to apply, far more consistent, and — properly specified — lasts considerably longer.
It suits:
- Large concrete and panel elevations
- Elevations over existing render that needs renewing
- Buildings where appearance has drifted but the fabric is sound
It does not suit a wall that is wet, unstable or structurally compromised. That needs repairing first.
How we approach it
- Full inspection and testing. We tap-test the existing render, map the areas that have blown off, and identify where water is getting in.
- Strip and repair. Loose and failed render comes off. Cracks get opened and properly repaired, not filled over.
- Substrate repair. Panel joints, flashings and concrete defects are made good. No coating fixes a moving joint.
- Prime. Selected for the substrate — different render and different masonry need different primers.
- Spray the finish. Even coverage at a controlled thickness, which is what gives the consistent appearance.
- Protect and clean down. Windows, cladding, paving and planting covered and cleaned as we go.
Colour and appearance
Commercial buildings often need to stay visually consistent with a corporate palette or an adjoining section that is not being coated. We can colour-match to an existing finish so the renewal is not obvious from the road — which is usually the whole point of doing it.
Access
Access is usually the largest single line in a texture coating quote. We will tell you honestly whether scaffold, a boom lift or rope access is the right call for the building, and where a cheaper system would do the job just as well.
Questions
Texture Coating & Spray Rendering — common questions
What is texture coating, in plain terms?
A sprayed acrylic finish, applied over a prepared surface, that creates a fine even texture. It is the finish you see on most modern commercial and industrial buildings.
It is not the same as spray rendering a bare wall from scratch — the wall needs a sound base for the coating to work.
Can you coat over old render?
Only where the old render is sound. Where it has blown off, cracked through, or is holding water, it comes off first.
We hammer-tap test and inspect the whole elevation before quoting, so the quote reflects the actual condition rather than an optimistic guess.
How long does a large elevation take?
Far less than hand rendering, which is the main reason it is worth using at this scale. The programme is driven by access and scaffold or rope, not by application speed.
What colours are available?
Wide ranges in the Dulux systems, including colour-matched to an existing corporate palette if you are trying to keep a building looking the same after decades of weathering.
Do you need access equipment?
Almost always. Depending on the building we will use scaffold, boom lift or rope access, and we will tell you in the quote which and why.
If access is the expensive part, we can sometimes specify a lower-cost system that suits a less demanding surface.
